Professional Growth Through BCECTA’s Pro D Day

As a teacher candidate at UNBC, I have the unique opportunity to work in the school district as an Unqualified Teacher-on-Call. Recently, I participated in a Professional Development (Pro D) Day session hosted by BCECTA (BC Early Career Teachers Association) on the theme “Growing Together.” Pro D Days are an essential aspect of ongoing training for educators, designed to foster personal growth, enhance skills, expand knowledge, and support career advancement.

The BCECTA session began with an introduction to the network, emphasizing its purpose: to support and equip new teachers with valuable resources, guidance, and a sense of community. Attendees were given the option to explore various topics, and I chose two areas that resonated with me deeply: adaptability and managing stress.

In the session on adaptability, the discussion centered on the need for flexibility in the constantly evolving field of education. With challenges such as managing technology use in classrooms (e.g., cell phones), it is vital to stay responsive and proactive. The session reinforced several key strategies, including:

  • Identifying strengths and areas for improvement to refine one’s teaching practice.
  • Adapting teaching strategies and methods to meet diverse learning styles.
  • Modifying lesson plans to address unexpected changes.
  • Being open to feedback from colleagues to enhance growth and effectiveness.

This session reminded me of the importance of remaining adaptable in order to meet the dynamic needs of students and the classroom environment.

In the session on managing stress, the presenter focused on how stressors impact our mood and motivation, and he provided practical tips for overcoming them. One concept that stood out to me was the idea of setting SMART goals(Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) to stay focused and maintain balance. However, my biggest takeaway was the emphasis on prioritizing self-care and seeking support. The presenter highlighted the importance of maintaining physical and mental well-being through activities like outdoor walks, exercise, and leisure reading.

What truly resonated with me was knowing that BCECTA serves as a support network for new teachers who might feel overwhelmed. Alongside family, colleagues, friends, and the broader community, this network provides an invaluable layer of encouragement and assistance.

Attending this Pro D Day session was a powerful reminder of the importance of lifelong learning and self-care in the teaching profession. It reinforced my belief that being a great educator means not only supporting students but also ensuring I am supported and equipped to face challenges with resilience and confidence.
